What are the Prerequisites for Taking the PMP® Certification Exam?

To take the PMP® Certification Exam, you must have met two important requirements.

1- Experience Prerequisite
You must have at least 4,500 hours of project management experience. This period is approximately 3 years. You declare your 3 years of experience by writing in the application form.

All declared project management experience must have occurred within the last 8 years prior to the application date. The experience should include work that requires the management and direction of the cross-functional project team(s). [“leading and directing cross-functional project team(s)”] It is not necessary that your official title in the company is project manager.​​

* if you have a 4-year university degree, professional project management experience is required, the total of which is at least 36 months and does not overlap with each other.

* If you have a high school diploma, professional project management experience is required, the total of which is at least 60 months and does not overlap with each other.

Proof of experience statement: No proof is required at the beginning. At random, some applications are checked. If your application is audited, you will not be asked for a project document or a company document. An individual at the company (“organization contact”) will verify the information you have submitted. During the audit, you may also be asked to provide more detailed information about your experience.

2- Education Prerequisite
You must have received 35 hours of training to take the exam. You declare the training you will receive for the PMP® Exam in the application form and thus you meet the second condition of taking the exam.

Timing of the Certification Process

The first step is to go to the PMI ® ’s web page and apply.​

If an audit occurs, PMI ® will send you an e-mail message explaining the audit process. This e-mail message will arrive within a week after submitting your application. After passing the inspection process, you will have 1 year to take the exam.​

If there is no audit, PMI ® will send you an e-mail message informing you that your application has been approved. You will have 1 year to take the exam.

You can take the exam no more than 3 times during this 1-year time. Admission to the exam for the second and third time is paid.​

The exam is held not on certain dates, but on an ongoing basis. In most countries, it is possible to take the exam in an off-line environment by visiting the exam center.

​Before taking the PMP ® exam, you will be asked to show an official identification document with your photo and signature. For example, the old type of penetration wallet is not accepted because it does not have your signature on the document. You should not have anything with you during the exam.

In most countries, it is possible to take the exam online and using your own computer. Things you need: a computer and a webcam (internal or external), a reliable internet connection, a reliable power supply of your computer if the charge is reduced, and a few uninterrupted hours, where you can spend a quiet and isolated environment.

In Which Languages Is The PMP® Certification Exam Conducted?

You can get free foreign language support for these 14 languages: Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified) Chinese (traditional), French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish. If you want foreign language support; during the application process, please choose a language other than English. If you receive foreign language support, the questions will appear in the language of your choice. In addition, if you click on the corresponding button on the screen, you will also see the original form of the question written in English. The English version of the question appears on the screen in a separate pop-up window. This is an important advantage of receiving foreign language support.

If you receive foreign language support and pass the exam, you will receive a certificate written in English and internationally recognized.

​If you do not receive foreign language support, you will see the questions in English. You will not have the opportunity to see the questions in another language.​

PMP® Certification Exam Fee​​

It is not necessary to be a member of PMI ® to apply for the exam or to continue the PMP ® certificate.

PMP® Certification Exam Questions

​The exam consists of 180 questions. For incorrect answers, the score is unbreakable. The duration of the exam is 230 minutes. During the exam, two 10 dec minute breaks are made. The exam has the following types of questions: Multiple choice test question, test question with more than one correct answer marked, matching question, marking question on the form, and filling in the blank question. Immediately after completing the exam, you will see the result on the screen.

​The score required to pass the exam is not reported by PMI® . It is estimated that in order to pass the exam, it is necessary to answer about 67% of the questions correctly.

5 questions out of 180 questions are special. Your answers to these questions will not affect your exam score. These questions are candidate questions that can be included among the scored questions in other exams that will be held in the future dec

Changing the PMP® Certification Exam Date

If there is a period of more than 30 days between the date of the exam and the current date, you can change the date of the exam for free. dec. In the time period from 2 to 30 days before your exam appointment, you can change your exam date by paying a $70 fee. Except in cases of force majeure, you cannot change your exam date in the last 2 days. If you are unable to take the exam due to force majeure, please contact PMI ® Customer Service.​

Retaking the PMP® Certification Exam

You have 1 year to pass the exam. You can take the exam no more than 3 times during this 1-year time. If you fail the exam 3 times within this one-year period; to reapply for the certificate, you must wait one year from the date of the last exam you entered. When you reapply, you will need to apply for a new exam from the very beginning.

Continuation of Certification​

Persons who have obtained a PMP ® certificate must renew their certificate every 3 years to actively maintain it. In order to renew the certificate, 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) must be collected within this 3-year period. if you earn more than 60 PDUs in 3 years, you can add some of the PDUs to your next 3-year cycle. However, additional PDUs earned only in the last year (12 months) of your 3-year certification cycle can be added to the next 3-year cycle, with a maximum of 20 PDUs. In order to continue the PMP ® certificate, it is not necessary to be a member of PMI ® . The fee to renew the certificate is $60 for PMI ® members and $150 for non-members. Please visit PMI ® ’s web page to learn how to earn PDU. When you have collected 60 PDUs, it is advisable to renew your certificate immediately and not wait for the end of your 3-year cycle.

Proof of PDU Declaration

Initially, no proof is required. At random, some PDU statements are checked. If your PDU statement is checked, you will be asked to submit supporting information and documents. But there is one exception. A PDU statement made for a course provided by an Authorized Training Partner of PMI ® is automatically approved by PMI ® without any audit.

Resources Required for the PMP® Exam

As of 2.1.2021, PMI® started to share its training documents with companies that are Authorized Training Partners. Training documents and exam question sets prepared by PMI® started to be shared only with those who attended the trainings through these companies.

Therefore, all formerly valid supplementary books have lost their meaning. In order to access the training documents prepared by PMI®, the participants must pay an additional $109+VAT in addition to the training fee. Thus, they have the opportunity to access the training documents and question sets of PMI® for 1 year.
