ZEUS’ PUNISHMENT

Resource: Opinio Juris

And Zeus condemns King Sisyphus to roll a large boulder off to the top of a steep hill. When Sisyphus reaches the top of the hill, the rock will slip out of his grasp and Sisyphus will have to start all over again; Forever.

The great philosopher Aristotle divided the activities into two, 2300 years ago. Goal-oriented activities and regular activities.

Goal-oriented activities are the sum of activities done to achieve a goal.

For example, you have a monthly sales quota goal, you achieve it, and the next month’s goal comes in even higher. You take part in a project with excitement, you succeed, and then you come across a more complex and difficult project.

Wanting to reach a specific goal motivates and excites people. It creates great satisfaction when the goal is achieved. But this feeling of satisfaction comes and goes. In order to achieve a new sense of satisfaction, you set a new goal and start rolling the boulder up again.

Regular activities are the sum of activities that have no purpose. These activities are natural activities brought by our daily lives rather than achieving a special purpose. These activities do not reach a goal and are continuous. For example, the necessity of doing sports throughout our lives in order to lead a healthy life. It is not intended for any particular purpose. Another example is that the activities we will do in nature to reduce our stress level will never come to an end. Reading books to distract our minds from the work environment or writing various kinds of articles, as I do, are activities done for purely personal satisfaction. How long the regular activities will last and how much time the person will devote is entirely up to that person.

Even 2300 years ago, it was written that the secret of a healthy life was the balance between goal-oriented and regular activities. Today, we have to devote much more time to goal-oriented activities than we did 2300 years ago.

Set aside time for regular activities, as well as time for goal-oriented activities. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck rolling the boulder up the hill like King Sisyphus forever. Stay well.
